Cruzeiro could be forced to change home grounds in the Brazilian Serie A; understand why
A state decree in Minas Gerais that prohibits advertising by betting companies on public property could directly impact Cruzeiro. The CBF has notified the club about the decision, raising the possibility that the Mineirão stadium might cease to be the venue for the ‘Raposa’ (Fox) team’s Brazilian Serie A games. The measure, while not imposing an immediate ban on playing at the stadium, creates pressure for a solution.
The main point of contention lies in the CBF‘s commercial agreements with betting sponsors, which could become unviable at the Mineirão due to the new state legislation. The Minas Gerais government published Decree No. 49.279, which prohibits the broadcast of advertising and sponsorship from betting companies in public spaces, including the stadium that has been granted to private management.
The highest governing body of Brazilian football emphasizes that, as the home team, it is Cruzeiro‘s responsibility to ensure that the stadium chosen for the matches complies with the competition’s commercial rules. The CBF has not commented on the validity of the decree but stressed the need to protect its commercial assets and those of the Copa do Brasil.
Although Cruzeiro‘s games are still confirmed at the Mineirão – including the match against Flamengo this Saturday (22) – the situation demands attention and potential adjustments from the Minas Gerais club. The lack of an agreement could affect the stadium’s use in future Brazilian Serie A and Copa do Brasil matches if the impasse continues. The club’s board has not yet officially commented on the matter.
