Focusing on managing Arrascaeta’s workload and squad planning, Flamengo is monitoring the transfer market for a new playmaker while exercising caution in potential negotiations.
Flamengo is at a crucial strategic moment in this transfer window. With the squad under the command of Leonardo Jardim, the Gávea club has made signing a “number 10” their top priority for the remainder of the season. The search for a new playmaker is not just a tactical choice, but a physical necessity to ensure the longevity of Uruguayan star Arrascaeta.
At 32 years old, the midfielder has faced a recent history of injuries that concerns the coaching staff. A broken collarbone and a calf injury—which kept him out of the World Cup—have made it clear that the Rubro-Negro’s number 14 requires strict workload management.
Leonardo Jardim’s vision
For the Portuguese coach, the arrival of a high-profile player for the creative sector is vital. The goal is not to replace the Uruguayan, but to ensure the team remains competitive when the idol needs to be rested, or even to make it possible for both to play together on the pitch.
“We already know that he is often not able to play the full 90 minutes, so I think it is important to have a quality player as well so that, with Arrasca, we have solutions there and, often, play together as well,” the coach explained.
Financial management and market caution
Optimism for new signings, however, faces the financial reality following the record investment in Lucas Paquetá, which cost Flamengo R$ 315 million. President Luiz Eduardo Baptista admitted that the club is going through a period of financial “digestion.”
In addition to the midfielder, the Rubro-Negro is keeping an eye out for a center-forward to serve as a backup to Pedro, as well as a reinforcement for the left-back position. However, any potential exits, such as that of right-back Emerson Royal, are under rigorous analysis.
The Emerson Royal case and Aston Villa
Aston Villa, from England, has signaled a €9 million offer for the right-back, but Flamengo has made it clear: the deal will only move forward if the club finds a suitable replacement. The scarcity of elite full-backs in the current market makes the operation complex.
For now, Emerson Royal remains part of the squad and guarantees total focus on the Mais Querido: “As I say, my head is always at Flamengo. Until anything is decided, my head is here; I am a Flamengo player,” the player stated.
The board’s next challenge is to balance the need for a deep squad to compete for titles this season with fiscal responsibility, in a market that, as the president himself warned, requires caution after recent heavy investments.
