The Palmeiras squad, managed by Abel Ferreira, is gearing up for a crucial showdown against Internacional this Sunday (9).

EXPLORE OPPORTUNITIES

With a squad that has dealt with recent absences due to injuries and time off following the World Cup, the coaching staff has had to act quickly to adjust the team.

The most significant factor in this scenario is the search for an ideal formation that can replicate their success in the continental tournament.

Abel Ferreira‘s experiments in recent games point to a robust squad, though some positions are still being re-evaluated.

The pressure for results and the proximity of the Libertadores turn this domestic clash into a vital laboratory for the team.

Doubts in the Attack: Who will be the focal point?

Expectations are that Palmeiras will field a lineup very similar to the one that will face Cerro Porteño at Nubank Parque.

In the attacking sector, Flaco López is emerging as the primary option for the center-forward position.

Conversely, Vitor Roque‘s situation still raises questions. The player, who is recovering from ankle surgery, is searching for his ideal physical form, and his place in the starting lineup has diminished with the strong performances of players like Mauricio and Ramón Sosa.

Vitor Roque hasn’t found the back of the net since the Campeonato Paulista final in March, highlighting a period of reduced prominence.

Defensive Consolidation and a Strong Midfield

In defense, the three-center-back system has been cemented since the arrival of Alexander Barboza. The defender, recovered from a foot injury, is a key piece.

The coaching staff is monitoring the physical progress of captain Gustavo Gómez to complete the ideal trio alongside Murilo.

In midfield, the duo of Marlon Freitas and Andreas Pereira serves as the backbone, standing out as the outfield players with the most appearances this season, trailing only goalkeeper Carlos Miguel.

The tactical shift has moved Allan to the right flank, while Piquerez commands the left, facing competition from youngster Arthur.

Meritocracy and Squad Management

Abel Ferreira has reiterated the importance of meritocracy and daily work as pillars for defining the lineup. According to the coach, internal competition is vital to maintaining a winning culture.

For me, it’s very simple. It’s common-sense leadership, it’s meritocracy, it’s understanding that a squad isn’t just 11 players, it’s realizing that there are rules within a group and they must be followed. […] And it’s what I always say: for players and coaches who want to win titles, the first competition is internal. The sporting director is a sporting director, not a communications director, each in their role. And the players know that we are 30 athletes and only 11 can play.

The variety and quality of the squad, considered by Abel to be the best since his arrival in 2020, increase the responsibility in managing the group while expanding tactical options in all sectors.

Palmeiras has accumulated 47 points in 21 rounds, boasting the best campaign in their history in the current league format, with a success rate of about 75%.

They have 14 wins, five draws, and only two losses. Since their 2-1 victory over Botafogo in the seventh round, the team has maintained the league lead, sitting eight points ahead of Flamengo.

Abel Ferreira‘s focus remains unwavering, as he stated:

Winning titles is what motivates me, that’s why I’m at Palmeiras, and it’s what we have been doing in recent years.

The match against Internacional therefore represents not just another three points in the Brazilian Serie A, but a final barometer for Palmeiras‘ ambitions in the Copa Libertadores, where every detail can make the difference in the pursuit of the title.

Sunday’s performance will be crucial to solidify the team’s confidence and chemistry before the continental challenges.
