The expansion of the 2026 World Cup to 48 teams and the inclusion of a preliminary knockout stage (Round of 32) have confirmed expectations of a historic edition. With the Round of 16 commencing this Saturday (4th), the tournament hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico has already set new absolute records in areas ranging from stadium attendance to the all-time top scorer list.
The group stage alone featured 72 matches, a higher volume than the entire schedule of any previous edition. This increase in games propelled a new goal-scoring record: the mark of 172 goals set in Qatar in 2022 was surpassed during the first phase, which saw 215 balls hit the back of the net. With the conclusion of the initial knockout stage, the competition’s current tally reached 257 goals. Total stadium attendance also reached unprecedented levels, surpassing 5 million spectators and breaking the record held by the United States since 1994, which was 3.6 million.

Messi and Mbappé Surpass Klose

On an individual level, the 2026 World Cup has reshaped the top of the all-time leading scorers list in World Cup history. Germany’s Miroslav Klose, who led with 16 goals, has been overtaken by Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé. Messi reached 20 career World Cup goals (seven in this edition), while Mbappé hit 18 goals (six in 2026). The French forward also became the all-time top scorer in knockout stage matches, accumulating 10 goals, while the Argentine superstar set the record for the longest streak of consecutive games with goals, with eight matches in a row since the previous World Cup.

Other veteran athletes have secured a place in the tournament’s record books:

* Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal): Became the only player to score in six different World Cup editions (2006 to 2026), adding three goals in the current tournament at 41 years old.
* Six World Cups Played: Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Mexican goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa reached the historic milestone of six World Cup appearances.

Defensive Efficiency and Curious Statistics

In defense, Spanish goalkeeper Unai Simón broke the clean sheet record previously held by Italy’s Walter Zenga since 1990. Simón achieved a mark of 519 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal in the World Cup (counting regulation time and extra time), surpassing the previous record by two minutes. Spain’s streak will be tested in the Round of 16 match against Portugal.

Finally, the high volume of games in the current edition has also led to unusual statistics. The tournament has already registered the most come-from-behind victories in World Cup history (13 matches) and the highest number of own goals. The own goal record was broken after an own goal by Egypt’s Mohamed Hany in the match against Australia, surpassing the 12 own goals scored in Russia in 2018. Hany tied a mark from 1966 by scoring two own goals in the same tournament edition.
