In the video, Gabriel Barbosa, known as Gabigol, stated that he did not intend to disrespect Santos, a club he considers “the team of my heart.” He claimed that parts of his statements were edited and taken out of context, fueling the controversy. The striker also reinforced his respect for Cruzeiro, the club with which he is currently under contract, while acknowledging the special bond he shares with Flamengo.
At no point was it my intention to disrespect Santos. On the contrary, everyone knows it is the team of my heart. Some things were cut out, so it was taken a bit out of context.
I respect Cruzeiro, I have two years left on my contract, which is why I said I would return there. And whenever Flamengo is involved, there is always some uncertainty regarding what I say. If anyone felt offended, that was not my intention. I am a Santos fan and I want to stay here for a long time.
Understanding the controversy
The comment that inflamed tensions occurred when Gabigol admitted he had a desire to return to Flamengo. He cited the passion the Rio de Janeiro club sparks in him, the history they built, the players, the titles, and the fans, noting that he played longer for the Rubro-Negro than he has for Santos.
Currently on loan at Vila Belmiro, the remark sounded like potential dissatisfaction with the São Paulo club, necessitating an immediate clarification.
Contractual status and past at Flamengo
Gabigol is currently at Santos on loan, with his permanent rights belonging to Cruzeiro. His return to the Minas Gerais club is expected at the end of the loan agreement. His departure from Flamengo, where he achieved legendary status with decisive goals and 13 titles—including two Copa Libertadores and two Brazilian Serie A championships—is still fresh in the minds of many.
