In response to Flamengo’s filing with ANRESF regarding the financial health of the Vasco SAF, Vasco president Pedrinho launched sharp criticisms against Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as BAP.
Tensions behind the scenes of Brazilian football have reached a boiling point. The decision by Flamengo‘s board to approach ANRESF (National Agency for Football Regulation and Sustainability) to question Vasco da Gama‘s financial situation has triggered an explosive reaction from the Cruzmaltino president, Pedrinho. On Wednesday (19), the head of the São Januário club did not hold back in his direct attacks on the Rubro-Negro president, Luiz Eduardo Baptista, known as BAP.
The conflict began after Flamengo filed a document requesting a rigorous analysis of Vasco‘s judicial restructuring and emergency financing. The Rubro-Negro leadership argues that there is an administrative inconsistency within their rival, which claims financial difficulties while simultaneously investing approximately R$ 60 million in new signings during the current transfer market, such as the acquisitions of Argentines Santiago Sosa and Facundo Colidio.
Pedrinho’s attacks on BAP
During the Vasco delegation’s departure for Asunción, Paraguay, Pedrinho made it clear that his criticisms are aimed exclusively at BAP as an individual, not at the Flamengo institution. The Vasco president labeled the executive a hypocrite when addressing his rhetoric regarding “equality” in the Brazilian Serie A.
Pedrinho fired back:
“I am talking about BAP the person. Nothing to do with the institution (Flamengo), okay? I am speaking specifically about BAP. He is unscrupulous, arrogant, pretentious, haughty, and hypocritical. Hypocritical because he uses the phrase: ‘I am doing this for the good of the Brazilian Serie A. It is so the Brazilian Serie A can have equality and a legal process.’ That is, when it doesn’t concern the club he represents.”
Persecution and Financial Fair Play
For the Cruzmaltino leader, the notification to ANRESF is a clear attempt to target the Vasco da Gama institution. Pedrinho countered the Rubro-Negro executive’s stance, questioning why the same level of scrutiny is not applied to other clubs that also face judicial restructuring processes but remain active in the transfer market.
The Vasco president added:
“It is very clear that this is a persecution of the institution. He is irresponsible and should take care of his own club. He won’t get away with this regarding Vasco da Gama. He needs to show much more respect for Vasco.”
The clash highlights a discussion that promises to stir things up over the coming months: the need for stricter financial fair play rules in national football. While Flamengo argues that emergency credit should not be used to inflate rosters, the case remains one of the main topics of debate for the M360 team and the rest of the sports press. Expectations are that ANRESF will analyze the case, while the atmosphere between the rival clubs remains tense.
