CBF releases VAR audio explaining Samuel Lino’s disallowed goal against São Paulo.

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) has finally unveiled the behind-the-scenes details of the controversial decision that defined the clash between Flamengo and São Paulo, held on July 26 in the Brazilian Serie A. More than two weeks after the final whistle, the VAR audio concerning the disallowed goal by Samuel Lino has been released, clarifying the reasons that led to the invalidation of the Rubro-Negro effort.

Detailed Analysis of the Play

At the moment the ball hit the net at the Maracanã, the referee, Anderson Daronco, waited for a review from the video assistant referee (VAR) team. The initial analysis focused on a possible handball by Arrascaeta inside the box. However, the footage revealed that the ball actually struck the Flamengo number 10 in the face.

The Deciding Factor: Semi-Automated Offside

The review continued with a check of the semi-automated offside technology. It was at this point that the decision was finalized: the lines drawn on the images showed that forward Wallace Yan was millimeters ahead of the last São Paulo defender during the play. This finding resulted in the goal being disallowed and left Mengo fans frustrated.

Impact on the Championship and Upcoming Challenges

At that stage of the match, the score was tied 1-1 between Flamengo and São Paulo. The confirmation of the goal could have significantly altered the outcome, bringing Mengo closer to an important victory and three crucial points in the standings. Currently, following a draw against Internacional and a 2-0 victory over Vitória last Sunday (09), Flamengo has 42 points, closing the gap on league leaders Palmeiras, who have 48. The club’s next commitment in the national competition will be against Mirassol, away from home, on Sunday (16). Before that, the team’s focus shifts to the decisive first leg of the Libertadores Round of 16 against Cruzeiro this Wednesday (12) at the Mineirão.
